Hello Readers,
What makes a good job posting? For me, the basics are
Job Title and Summary that don’t rely on acronyms or jargon.
A concise list of Responsibilities and Duties that indicates the employer has thought it through rather than a long list that is “written by committee”
An Education, Qualifications, Skills section that is clear about what qualifications are truly required (and related to responsibilities) and which are “nice to have’s.”
Published Salary Range and Employee Benefits: I list positions that do not include a salary range, but always with some regret.
Hours and Location: If the work is on-site please mention where the “site” is. If the position is hybrid or remote is there flexibility? Is there an expectation that the employee has a home office?
I am happy when I come across a position description written from a candidate-centric point of view — one that indicates that the employer has really thought about who would be a good fit for the position, as well as how an applicant might demonstrate that fit. While perhaps not a high interest job for my readers, this description of a Cleaner position at the Disgusting Food Museum provides a good example:
Do you often find yourself annoyed at how bad others are at cleaning?
When you walk into a room, is the first thing you notice the level of cleanliness of the place?
Does it often feel like your sanitary skills are wasted in this ungrateful world of muck?
If cleanliness is next to godliness are you that god, wielding your holy mop of radiance against the eternal hordes of dust and grime from hell, with a smile on your lips?
If you answered yes to all of the questions above you are either a disgruntled dust broom or potentially our next superstar!
… We are looking for someone who would love to take ownership of the entire cleaning operation of the museum. Someone who is significantly better at cleaning than we are and who brings their own ideas and suggestions on how to continuously improve. Someone who sees what needs to be done, does it, and then tells us what would be needed to be more efficient with it in the future.
And for the right position, a little humor is nice too.
