Thinking Food Jobs, March 22, 2024
Hello Readers,
I subscribe to a number of newsletters for ideas and inspiration to help me build each week’s Thinking Food Jobs list. One of these, Jen Glantz’s “Odd Jobs” stubstack, recently highlighted “An Odd Job Per State.” I was struck by how many of the state-specific jobs are food-related: oyster shucker in Delaware, potato chip inspector in Idaho, bourbon taster in Kentucky, crawfish peeler in Louisiana, lobster wrangler in Maine, maple syrup tapper in New Hampshire, grits cook-off judge in South Carolina — even a cheese sculptor in Vermont. Food is often used to define place, so for me these positions are not so “odd”.
While I try to focus on practical opportunities that I believe you and my other readers might wish to pursue, the occasional “odd” job adds some levity and interest to the list. Here are two from this week:
Hershey’s Chocolate World, the theme park associated with the candy empire, has a part-time opening for an actor to play “Doc Chocolate” in their sensory immersion theater show, Hershey’s Unwrapped. Some acting experience is preferred but not required
HistoriCorps, a non-profit with a mission to engage volunteers in saving historic places, is hiring crew leaders who are either “good cooks who love old buildings and camping in the wilderness” or “young historic preservationists who love cooking” for seasonal work in the spring, summer and fall.
Many “food people” have extensive creative talents. Maybe you know someone who would enjoy one of these roles?
